CHF was established in November 1977 by the company’s founder Mr Ram Chandra who came from an upholstery manufacturing background.
In the early 1970’s, Mr Chandra was the production manager for a UK based company in Fiji called Hensher (Fiji) Limited in joint venture with British Vita Limited.
After several years of management experience working overseas, Mr Chandra decided to venture into CHF which – at that time - showed a slow but steady growth pattern over the last 20 years. Back in those days, CHF used to manufacture a wide array of furniture, ranging from beds, kitchens, sofas to wooden furniture, tubular steel furniture, marine upholstery, carpet laying and others. Then, in the mid 1990s, the company specialised itself in the production of bedding products as the market indicated a high demand for leading bedding manufacturers.
In early 2000, CHF started to export its bedding products out of Fiji to the neighbouring Pacific countries such as Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, New Zealand, Australia and other smaller nations, promoting its own brand of beds called “Sleepmate.”
In 2005 CHF took another turn in business, focusing on the sole production of wooden furniture. In collaboration with a New Zealand manufacturer, CHF started to produce Mahogany furniture in Fiji, exporting their manufactured pieces to New Zealand and other Island countries.
In 2007, CHF bought their JV partners out, a move which made them sole shareholders of the timber manufacturing company, and the company continued to supply local retailers in Fiji with its wooden furniture.
While CHF’s continued to export and produce high quality furniture, the company managed to secure international brand names to manufacture in their Fiji factory such as “Sleepmaker,” “King Koil,” “Sleep on it,” “Dunlop Bedding,” “Sheridan” and “Actil.” This also gave the company an edge to expand into other Fijian markets such as hospitality, commercial services and health care supply, allowing CHF to become a major player in the Pacific market.
In 2007 CHF was bought by Mr Chandra senior’s two sons, Mr Himen Chandra and Mr Khamen Chandra, who had been successfully involved in the business over the past 10 years, supporting the company’s expansion and growth.
To this date, CHF GROUP employs over 100 employees in its two factories, consisting of an area of over 50,000 square feet in Fiji, marketing offices in Sydney and Auckland as well as many additional distributors in the Pacific Region. CHF Group continues to expand its corporate culture driven by innovation, design and quality, aiming to continuously broaden its horizon while producing high quality, solid timber furniture.
All in all the company’s vision is to ensure the best deals possible to affordable value, offering a unique combination of character, durability and appropriate designs to create special pieces for each individual customer. |
